Most instant (tankless) propane water heaters use roughly 0.5 to 2 gallons of propane per hour while running at a typical hot-water load, with higher usage possible at full fire. The exact number depends on the heater’s BTU rating, how hard it’s working (temperature rise and flow rate), and how long hot water is actually being drawn.
Propane consumption is best estimated from the unit’s input rating. Propane contains about 91,500 BTU per gallon. So a 150,000 BTU tankless heater at maximum output would use about 150,000 ÷ 91,500 = 1.64 gallons per hour while it’s firing. A larger 199,000 BTU model would be about 2.17 gallons per hour at full fire.
But tankless units don’t run continuously. If your shower uses hot water for 20 minutes, and the heater averages around 60% of max during that time, the propane burn could be closer to 0.3–0.8 gallons for that single shower session, depending on the model and your incoming water temperature.
Cold groundwater in winter forces the heater to burn more fuel to reach the same set temperature. The same shower can cost noticeably more propane in January than in July.
Running a shower and a sink at once increases the required BTUs, pushing the burner closer to maximum and raising gallons-per-hour consumption.
Higher-BTU heaters can use more propane per hour at full fire, but they may run less time to deliver the same job. Efficiency also affects how much of the fuel becomes usable hot water.

A full 20 lb tank holds about 4.7 gallons of propane. If the heater averages 1.0 gallon per hour while firing, that’s roughly 4–5 hours of burner run time (spread across many uses), more or less depending on load and temperature rise.
